Informed Consent Agreement

Please read this consent agreement carefully before you decide to participate in the study.

Purpose of the research study: The purpose of the study is to gather data about stress associated with being a sexual minority (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or same-gender loving), and factors that may increase or decrease the effects of these stresses on mental health.

What you will do in the study: Participants will be asked to respond to questions about experiences related to their sexual orientation, stress, coping and patterns of substance use. You may skip any question and stop the survey at any time.

Time required: The study will require about 15-25 minutes of your time.

Risks: The risks anticipated with participating in this study is short-term discomfort recalling stressful experiences and/or reflecting on your substance use. There is a very small chance that the information you provide may become accessible to others via the Internet or the computer you use. Those who are concerned about this risk may complete this survey using their personal computer or not provide their e-mail address.

Benefits: There are no direct benefits for participating in this study. The study may help researchers better understand how stress related to sexual orientation impact individuals’ lives, including the factors that predict resilience in this population.

Confidentiality: The information that you give in the study will be handled confidentially. Your information will be assigned a code number and the list connecting your e-mail address to this code will be kept in a locked file. Your e-mail address will not be used in any report or made available to anyone outside of the research team.

Voluntary participation: Your participation in the study is completely voluntary. You may also choose to skip or not to respond to specific study question(s).

Right to withdraw from the study: You have the right to withdraw from the study at any time without penalty.

How to withdraw from the study: If you want to withdraw from the study, you may stop answering survey questions and close your Internet browser. There is no penalty for withdrawing. If you would like to withdraw after your materials have been submitted, please contact the Principal Investigator, Michelle Vaughan, Ph.D. (contact information listed below).

Payment: You will receive no payment for participating in the study.
